What is Turmeric?
A tropical perennial native to south and southeastern Asia, turmeric (Curcuma longa) can reach a height of 6 feet. It is a member of the ginger family, and bears long, dark green leaves that sprout from a brightly colored yellow-orange system of rhizomes.
Turmeric’s rhizomes have seen a wide range of use, from culinary applications as a spice (most notably giving curry its signature color) to Hindu religious ceremonies and folk wellness practices. It was once also used as a dye, particularly in making saris and Buddhist robes. Today, turmeric is used worldwide for its naturally occurring antioxidant activity.
The rhizomes of turmeric naturally contain a rich supply of curcuminoids, which are plant-based antioxidants. The most notable of these nutrients is curcumin, which promotes antioxidant activity in the body, supporting overall health while helping to fight off cell-damaging free radicals that can lead to premature signs of aging.
Because curcumin is notoriously difficult to absorb, turmeric supplements should be taken with food. Most supplements will be standardized to ensure a certain percentage of curcuminoids per serving, and may be paired with other nutrients such as black pepper extract to help ensure better absorption and bioavailability.
